From time to time we get requests for information about tree giveaway programs. Today I saw a notice in the Orlando Sentinel about the Orange County Streetscape Adopt-a-Tree program. The monthly giveaway events are sponsored by the Orange County Extension, the county’s University of Florida/IFAS office, and they offer up to two trees to residents of the county.
Many counties and cities offer these types of programs for their residents. Usually a brief presentation is given on how to plant and care for the tree, and proof of residency is required. How easy is that?! To see if your county has an Adopt-a-Tree program in place, give your local Extension office a call. If the county does not, check with your city administration. Tree varieties vary by county and zone.
Planting a tree is a great way to participate in Florida agriculture while beautifying your landscape. For Orange County residents, the next giveaway is Saturday, June 20 at Jay Blanchard Park. For more details, call the Extension at 407-254-9200. Happy planting!
