Sad day for Agriculture in my neck of the woods.

March 6, 2009

I just found out last night that a neighbor of mine passed away last week.  We weren’t close, but every single time I would drive by he would stop whatever he was doing to wave hello.  It didn’t matter if he was weeding his huge garden of greens, shucking fresh corn, or taking a break.   And he had a wave for everybody.  We only talked a few times, usually when I was trading him some fish I’d just caught for some of his collards or turnip greens.

He was a remarkable man.  Up until last year he plowed his acreage with a mule.  At the age of 89.

I’ll miss your wave, Mr. Archie.  You were an inspiration to many of us.

Archie “O.L.” Huggins Sr., 90, of Monticello, died on Saturday, February 28, 2009.
