Where does my food come from?
It might sound simple, but have you ever taken the time to think about where your food comes from? Today Florida is celebrating “Ag Literacy Day”. Ag Literacy Day is used to teach children about where their food is coming from and about the state agriculture system. So Ag Literacy Day might be for children … however, the question – where does my food come from? – is a pretty thought provoking question.
Personally, I don’t ask myself that enough, where is my food coming from? How did it get here? Did it take 4 days on semi to make it’s way from Mexico to Florida, or is it from one of the local farms in my area? Or a producer in Florida? It’s just something to think about the next time that you are at the grocery store. Check your labels (or try to remember!) and see if it’s from Florida. I myself am trying to make a personal effort to support more of my local agriculture and local economy. I try to make an effort to go farmer’s markets and check tags in the produce section at Publix. Sometimes I do good and remember and other times I forget. But it’s all about the effort you put forth.
So why don’t you take a chance and visit your local farmer’s market this weekend (or any day it’s open!). Buy something and help support your local economy.
