U-Picks Offer Great Produce at Great Prices

March 30, 2009

Every now and again, friends of mine will ask about U-Pick farms to see what is open and what crops are growing.  I told them about going to Plant City with a group of friends several years ago to pick strawberries.

We got picnic supplies ready, piled into several cars and found our way to a farm that had just been opened to picking.  It was a commercial farm that was at the end of the season and wanted to sell the berries before plowing over the field.  As we picked, the farmer told us that we could even eat berries right off the plant.  The warm berries were ripe, juicy and sweet.  They were really inexpensive, too.  On the way home, we found a picnic area that had grills and we grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, and someone had the foresight to bring shortcake and Cool-Whip.  What a great day we had!

Because it was so much fun, my friends and I now plan to get a group together and set out for our big farm adventure.  There are so many things that can be found at U-Pick farms like blueberries, citrus, lettuces & greens, tomatoes, corn, squash…so many things!

If you’re looking for a fun activity for your family and friends, try heading to a Florida U-Pick farm.  In addition to getting great deals on the freshest, most delicious produce available, you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime.

You obviously did not go picking with my Grandmother. She was born in the Plant City area and could pick like no one else. Black-eyed Peas (the vegetable, not Fergie and company) did not stand a chance around her. She attended a strawberry school which let out in February for kids to pick. She was a beast in the garden!

Sounds like fun! I may have to try it someday.
