How to choose a good watermelon

June 4, 2009

watermelonAfter all the watermelon talk on here lately, I know you can’t resist running to the store to buy one for the weekend!  I mean, come on… who doesn’t love watermelon?  But do you know how to choose a good one?  I honestly had no idea until I went to Florida Watermelon Day at the Capitol yesterday.   I assume most people are clueless like I was, so here are three things to consider when picking out your watermelon:

1. Appearance – Look for firm, symmetrical watermelons that do not have cuts, bruises, dents or soft spots.

2. Weight – The watermelon should be heavy for its size, and the weight should be even on both sides.

3. Color – The bottom of the watermelon should have a creamy or yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.  If it’s white or green, the melon isn’t ripe.

Now you’re ready to go shopping!

That watermelon boat is so cute for parties. I’ll remember your buying guidelines when I shop for watermelon this summer!
