FAPC Member Spotlight – Florida Peanut Producers Association

June 26, 2009

The Florida Peanut Producers Association was established through a Federal Marketing Order in 1975 to promote, conduct research on and educate the public about Florida peanuts.  What the order does, well, in a nutshell, is calls for a self-tax system that has peanut farmers paying $3.00 per ton of harvested peanuts.  This assessment is dedicated to industry initiatives.

Currently about 600 growers are members of the FPPA, although the approximately 1,000 peanut farmers in Florida are not required to join the Association.  More than 190,000 tons of Florida peanuts were harvested in 2008.

Peanuts are delicious and lend themselves to sweet and savory dishes.  Adding roasted peanuts to salads, slaws and soups is a great way to get some protein and other beneficial nutrients.  This legume (not a nut) is enjoyed worldwide, and Chef Justin created this amazing recipe that has an Asian accent – Florida Peanut Noodles with Wild Shrimpwildpeanutshrimp

Not a fan of shrimp?  Try substituting chicken, pork, beef, or even more vegetables.

Boiled peanuts are another tasty treat that I enjoy, but one of my favorite ways to eat peanuts is with chocolate.  Check out the FPPA for recipes to satisfy those cravings and to learn more about delicious Florida peanuts.
