On Saturday, June 27th, we participated at an annual health event held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, Jacksonville, FL. The event was coordinated to address the unique health concerns of women of color. WJCT, Baptist Health, the Women of Color Cultural Foundation and “Fresh from Florida” were some of the contributing sponsors. The one-day event featured keynote speakers, small group sessions and free health screenings, all to provide vital health information. Tickets were $35, which included a continental breakfast and lunch.
Cultural factors, including traditional diets and exercise habits, can increase obesity among some minority groups, particularly African-Americans and Hispanics. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 25% of adults in the United States eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. African-Americans consume less than half the amount of vegetables that Caucasians consume.
