Twitter 101

July 10, 2009

I’m sure most of you have heard of Twitter. You can’t turn on the news or read an article on the internet without reading about it.twitter

If you didn’t know, we recently started our own Twitter page: @freshfromFL. It’s an expansion of this blog and our Florida Ag Facebook page. We are trying to increase awareness of Florida Agriculture throughout social media networks. Since we’ve started our Twitter page, I’ve had to learn a lot about Twitter, because I was not sold on it for a long time. Now I believe it is a very useful tool.

No matter if you are a business or an individual person interested in using Twitter, here are some great websites I have found that have really helped us get started.

The Ultimate Twitter Guidebook (from Mashable) – I was going to try to write out my own tips, but this website really covers everything Twitter-related from A – Z.

Mr Tweet – This is a great tool to help find more followers. This website takes the current people you are following and recommends more people to follow based on who you already have.

WeFollow – Another fantastic website to find followers. It sorts people who have registered onto the website into categories – such as agriculture, chef, food, etc.

Tweetdeck and Twhirl – Both are great applications that you can download to your desktop to make Twitter easier to use.

I am sure there are tons of other websites out there, but I mainly use the ones I listed above.

Here is a list of some Florida Agriculture people we follow in Twitter.

@PineLilyFNPS (one of our first Twitter followers) – Florida Native Plant (Osceola Chapter)
@OrchidIslandJ – Orchid Island Juice company
@FNPSBeautyberry – Florida Native Plant Society Lake Beautyberry Chapter
@floridaaquarium – The Florida Aquarium
@Fla4H_AnimalSci – Florida 4-H Horse & Livestock
@FNGLA – Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association
@FlaFruitandVeg – Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association
@CurbMarket – Farmers Curb Market in Lakeland, Florida
