Putnam County Goes Xtreme

August 4, 2009

Xtreme Cuisine 06 09 087Hi, I’m Arlette. I work in the Division of Marketing developing campaigns and promotions that benefit Florida youth through agriculture education groups and organizations. I love to see children gain personal satisfaction and confidence through cooking! Whether it is during the summer or after school, the Florida 4-H Youth Development program provides the perfect opportunity for them to learn. In fact, 4-H provides a wealth of learning opportunities for Florida kids ages 5 to 18 through nonformal, practical educational programs.

Whether it is a local 4-H club, a school enrichment program, a short-term program, or an area camping opportunity, it is the place where there’s fun in learning and learning in fun.

In Putnam County youth had an opportunity to  make their own healthy snacks using “Xtreme Cuisine Cooking School.” This program originated from the Division of Marketing within the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and is gaining popularity with 4-H leaders throughout the state. It is designed specifically for Florida youth and it teaches the health benefits of Florida produce commodities through dozens of fun and delicious snack recipes that youth can prepare with a supervising adult.

If you would like your child to learn how to make healthy snacks through “Xtreme Cuisine,” click on and contact your local 4-H program. Since 4-H is in every county in the state, there is a 4-H club just waiting for your child. In addition, Florida 4-H needs thousands of adult volunteers to assist with these programs. If you have the time, they would love for you to get involved.

What a great post, Arlette! We so appreciate our wonderful relationship with the Florida Department of Agriculture. You’re certainly correct that Florida 4-H provides excellent learning opportunities for Florida’s youth in an experiential environment through research-based curriculum. As you mentioned, there’s a lot of fun to be had as well… in all of our programs, including the Xtreme Cuisine!

Thank you for helping us spread the message about Florida 4-H, and we encourage people to visit our direct website at for more information about how to get involved!

You are very welcome. As I said, “Xtreme Cuisine” and Florida 4-H are a great fit. In fact, two of the winners of last year’s “Xtreme Cuisine Chef Demo Contest” were Florida 4-H programs from Escambia and Volusia counties. You will be hearing more about our this year’s contest soon. It begins September 30.

What an incredible learning experience for our youth in Putnam County! XTREME CUISINE provided an opportunity for the youth to gain life skills, including making healthful choices, preparing nutritious food, and learning all about Florida produce. The Putnam County Extension team looks forward to holding this camp again!

Thanks for your comment Wendy. “Xtreme Cuisine” will soon be a little easier to implement. We are developing an on-line Teacher’s Guide that can help you organize your subject matter, supplies, grocery list and more!

Again thank you for all that you do to support Florida 4-H. I have heard nothing but praises from the Extension agents who have participated in the program. And you are right, it is an excellent match with the Florida 4-H program.

It’s a great opportunity to teach youth about health lifestyles. Plus, the hands-on cooking program helps build confidence in preparing healthy meals.

Florida 4-H programs have a long history of providing hands-on learning that results in positive self-esteem and knowledge to tackle life’s issues. This is just one of many examples of a GREAT partnership where everyone wins.

Thanks to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for all you do to support Florida 4-H.

Some interesting ideas for student recipies, one of my favourites was just to add lots of chilli to every dish to disguise my bad cooking!
