A statewide two-day conference for and about small farms and locally-grown sustainable foods was sponsored by the University of Florida, Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd in Kissimmee, Florida. Increased consumer demands for local products such as organic, heirloom, hydroponic, grass-fed beef, pastured poultry, ethnic meats and vegetables are providing new and increased opportunities for producers.

The conference titled “Florida Small Farms Alternative Enterprises” provided two full days of educational and networking activities that will assist small farms in the future. Educational events consisted of presentations, workshops, demonstrations and discussion groups on a variety of topics. Topics included:

* Alternative Energy
* Alternative Enterprises
* Business and Marketing
* Horticulture
* Livestock including live animal exhibits
* Organic & Sustainable Farming
* Policy and Regulations

Our own Commissioner Charles H. Bronson opened the event Saturday morning. On Sunday, at the end of the conference, two of our “Fresh from Florida” members received the Florida Innovative Farmer Award. We are proud to congratulate Bobbie Golden, owner of Golden Acres Ranch in Monticello, FL and Linda Hart, owner of Crazy Hart Ranch in Fellsmere, FL. Ms. Golden is a sheep, goat and lamb producer; Ms. Hart produces chicken/poultry. Congratulations!
