Have Natural Beauty
I recently wrote an article for a publication from the Florida Dental Association on the benefits of fruits and vegetables to dental/oral health. One of the things I discovered while researching for it is that strawberries can be used to whiten your teeth (just be sure to rinse afterwards because the acid is bad for them). Anyway, it got me thinking about other “homemade” beauty treatments that you can make with fruit and vegetables! So much cheaper and you can eat the leftovers. 🙂 Here are some cool tricks that I found:
Avocados have collagen-building properties and contain vitamins A, D and E. Most of us have heard of using cucumber slices to reduce under eye puffiness, but you can also use a ripe avocado (and you can try this today since they are in season). Put a few slices under your eyes for 20 minutes and voila! Here are some more skin remedies that use avocado.
Papayas contain papain, an enzyme that treats and removes old or dead skin.
Try this “recipe” for a papaya face peel (from Natural Medicine).
Papaya Face Peel
1 packet unflavored gelatin
3 tbs water
Mix gelatin and water in saucepan over low heat until gelatin melts. Puree the papya thoroughly, strain and save the juice. Mix together gelatin and papaya, refrigerate for 20 minutes then apply to the face and neck. Leave for 15 minutes then rinse off.
Because it does have such a good effect on your skin, there are a lot of other remedies and recipes that use papaya out there. Here’s a good list of other treatments.
Tomatoes can counteract the effects that aging has on the skin because of the antioxidants they contain.
Here are two simple and quick “recipes” that use tomatoes (both from here).
Tomato Pore Tightener
Mix ingredients to form a dense liquid that does not run. Apply to face. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water.
Tomato Paste Pimple Reducer
Apply undiluted tomato paste to face. After 15 minutes rinse with warm water. Can also be used to treat individual pimples.
While it’s not a fruit or veggie, it does need to be mentioned that honey can work wonders for your skin! It helps to retain moisture and is very softening.
Cleopatra was known to regularly take milk and honey baths. You can take a bath with honey, too. Just add ¼ cup to bathwater for a silky bath. This recipe and more can be found at the National Honey Board’s website.
Here’s the recipe for the strawberry teeth whitening remedy that I mentioned before.
Take 1 ripe strawberry and mash it with ½ teaspoon baking soda. Spread onto your teeth and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse and brush thoroughly with toothpaste when the time is up.
I know there are many others out there. What are some of your favorite home beauty remedies that use fresh produce?
