School Lunches Get a Seafood Makeover

October 28, 2009

Back when I was in school, the cafeteria lunch left much to be desired. You could either go for the standard meal plopped down on a plastic tray or spend the money your mother gave you on pizza, french fries or a milkshake, much to her dismay. If you opted for the traditional meal, it usually came with a mystery meat that was hard to identify.

Lately it has been in the news that schools are trying to get away from the junk food and questionable “meals,” which I’m sure every parent is happy to hear! Florida’s seafood producers are trying to help the effort with the new “Seafood to Schools” program that seeks to bring nutritious seafood from local sources to Florida’s school lunchrooms. This great idea has gotten positive feedback from the state’s school districts. The program will give seafood suppliers the opportunity to provide products for Florida schools and will give students the chance to eat delicious Florida seafood!

Every year, Florida schools spend millions of dollars for school lunch programs. The “Seafood to Schools” program is intended to open the door for more of those dollars to stay within the state. It will also support Florida fisherman by promoting opportunities for schools and seafood suppliers to work together to increase the volume of locally harvested seafood served in school cafeterias. Additional information about the program can be found here.
