Xtreme Cuisine Chef Demo Contest Winners

At the Division of Marketing and Development we’re serious about fighting childhood obesity but we believe we can have fun while we are doing it.

Xtreme Cuisine Cooking School is a nutrition education curriculum developed by the Division of Marketing and Development. For the past three years, educators throughout Florida have used this program to teach students 4th grade and up to make healthy snacks using Florida fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. The curriculum provides four simple recipes that can be prepared in about 15 minutes each. Students who participate in the hands-on lessons quickly understand that they can make their own fun and nutritious snacks that taste better and are better for them than highly processed junk foods full of excessive sugar, fats and salt.

Now in its second year, the Xtreme Cuisine Chef Demo Contest offers three educators and their students a special feast and fun day with Chef Justin. To qualify, teachers were required to conduct an “Xtreme Cuisine” class with a minimum of  10 students in which the students prepared at least two “Xtreme Cuisine” recipes using six or more fresh Florida fruits and vegetables. At the completion of the classes, teachers sent in the completed contest entry forms with accompanying quizzes, documents and photographs.

The following winning classes were selected from three categories:

1. First — The first completed entry to be postmarked with accompanying documents.

Winner:  Michele Parson’s 5th graders at Nova Blanche Elementary School of Davie, Florida.

2. Great — The coordinator with the greatest number of participating students.

Winner: Mary Ann Bucceroni’s 4th and 5th graders of  Heights Elementary School in Ft Myers, Florida

3. Smart — The class that demonstrated the most impressive knowledge gained. Student essays, photos, quotes, drawings and other descriptions were encouraged.

Winner:  Deborah McHenry’s 9th and 10th graders at Hudson High School in Hudson, Florida.

Chef Justin presented a PowerPoint slideshow designed to help students understand the day-to-day responsibilities of an Executive Chef. They also learned to make Florida Fruit Sushi, Guacamole Baskets and Fruit Ka-bobs. Many enjoyed the taste of freshly made fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and dips prepared especially for the event.

In addition, they competed for prizes with Start Farmin’, a life-sized board game featuring trivia questions about modern day and historic agriculture. Everyone enjoyed rolling giant dice to move up the game board. The winning player reached the You Sold Your Harvest game square first.
