Epcot’s Fresh from Florida Weekend 2010 – Kumquat Growers

August 2, 2010
Kumquat Growers in Dade City is a family-owned farm where they grow kumquats.  They have participated for three years in the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival and were the impetus for the Department to become involved in the “Florida farmers’ market” weekends.

Fanchone and Greg Gude are dynamic people who love promoting kumquats and love the Fresh from Florida message.  Their colorful display is a huge hit, and people are fascinated by the look of the little kumquats.  In addition to growing and selling kumquats, the Gude family makes a line of marinades, jellies/jams, dressings, salsas and sauces, as well as kumquat puree.  The puree is the base for the very popular kumquat pie.

Fanchone and Greg Gude stand behind their kumquats!

Because of the January freeze, the Kumquat Growers lost their crop, but they expect to be back up and harvesting beginning in November.  The gift shop will also reopen in November, so if you get a chance, stop by and visit (and sample the yummy kumquats!)  Maybe you can buy or make some puree to make this treat:

My mom and a friend used to make kumquat jam. It was alright. I’d probably take orange marmalade over kumquat jam though.

I recently tried their new strawberry kumquat preserves and it is DELICIOUS! I’ve had it on my toast for the last five days.

      Hi, Chef. Thanks for writing!

The Kumquat Growers can be reached by calling 352-588-0544 or by e-mailing info@kumquatgrowers.com. Greg and Fanchone are great and would be happy to talk with you concerning your kumquat needs.

What’s your restaurant in Asheville? Even though you’re in NC you are eligible to join the Fresh from Florida program and would be able to use the logo on your menu and in promoting the products. It is free to food service members. Check out http://www.florida-agriculture.com/marketing/fapc.htm for more information.

As a side note, I went to college about an hour south of you in Spartanburg, SC. I miss the fall weather!
